IA2: Find a role model
Assignment 2
For this assignment I interviewed a role model that I found
in the business department at Chatham. “Did not get the permission to use a
name.” The role model’s major is Economics, and he/she is interested in the
economy of the US as a whole. And spends lots of time watching economy news on TV. Moreover, the role model
is addicted to social media, and especially Twitter. The role model uses
twitter nearly every single day to keep up with the economy news that happens
in the US every day. The role model is participating in his free time in a book
club, he joined this club almost 3 years ago.
After this introduction, I asked the role model to give me a
one or two pieces of good advice on good studying strategies. The role mode
shared his/her own studying strategies which is, first, when you study, ask
yourself lots of questions. It will help you understand the context more deeply
and create a better understanding which will lead to better memory. Second,
when you get to difficult or complicated information, try to draw out the
information in a visual form. Some people can memorize draws and diagram better
than a normal text.
Then I asked the role model a one or two pieces of good
advice on building a good portfolio/resume. The role model answered that the
best time to start a campus or odd-campus jobs is in your first
semester! Do not waste time, start to search for jobs the moment you start your
first week! Make appointments with your advisor and go visit your business
department and ask them for help. Moreover, try to attend every event that
relates to your major. Check the event’s calendar every week. Then we talked
about the summer internship and how successfully manage it. First you have to
have an actual job description for your intern role. Do not put a little
planning into what type of intern you may want. Second, always have goals! Do not
work just for completing your degree requirements but work to build your own
experience and skills. The role model mentioned that you always have to participate
in the activities and projects to develop your skills over time. You can do
that by knowing what is the most skill you think you are good at, then focus on
that skill vividly to try to develop it even more. Always ask questions in any
projects, take notes for things you don’t know. You should reinforce and put to
use what you have learn from these projects.
I found this article in Chatham Business Insight:
http://blogs.chatham.edu/businessblogs/2018/03/23/internship-spotlight-anh-nguyen-ba-marketing-and-economics-19/
and it is about an undergraduate student who had the chance
to intern with an organization.
Compare: finding an internship that fits your skills and
goals is essential. Also the internship will open a career opportunity and help
students to develop their own skills.
Contrast: the organization is nonprofit, and it mainly job
is to help public and community.
